2024

The end of July saw the termination of a highly successful 10th edition of the summer school. We welcomed eighteen participants from around the world, together with five tutors and other guests. Six outstanding editorial projects were completed resulting from six editorial groups. The results, accompanied by further information will be posted on the 2024 Edition page in the near future. In the meantime we want to thank all those involved for their engagement and dedication and the openness and friendship with which the edition was conducted. Great work by everybody.

Taking place once again at the Escola Artística e Profissional Árvore (Àrvore Artistic and Professional School), the venue continues to be an excellent location for the course in the heart of the city.

As usual the structure of the course balanced dynamic group projects with individual contributions and development, together with discussion, illustrated talks, practical production and of course, social time. The first week included short practical exercises aimed at exploring observation and the act of subtraction within the design process. Also included were lectures by Andrew Howard, Ana Resende and Hamish Muir. On the forth day the principle editorial brief was given. Working in six groups of three people each, editorial investigation was directed at a series of given texts supplemented by additional content that the groups were asked to research.

The beginning of the second week began with a talk by tutor André Cruz, and was followed by an informal book evening in which a number of notable designers from Porto were each invited to talk about an editorial project of their choice. Many thanks to these designers; Inês Nepomuceno, Mariana Marques and Dário Cannatà (Macedo Cannatà).

Working to a set of demanding objectives we are yet again thrilled that such fine work was produced in what amounts to a very short period of time — four printed and bound copies each of six editorial projects is really a great achievement. Thanks once again to all involved.
