Individual design interpretations that came together to form two collective editorial projects was the basis of the principle course work for the 2017 edition of the summer school.
The theme of the editions was an exploration of Italo Calvino’s enigmatic book ’Invisible Cities’. After setting a range of variable format parameters, which allowed flexible responses within a collective framework, the participants were split into two editorial groups. Each group of eleven then discussed how they would deal with common and/or shared aspects of the publication, whilst developing ideas for how they would design the individual chapters that were allocated to them.
Not only were the individual solutions dynamic in interpretation but there was an element of surprise and delight to see the (hitherto unknown) way in which the individual components would come together at the end to form the two collective and coherent editions. Individual and collective endeavour as a fitting reflection of the summer school.
