'above / below' is a project by Anna Barbist (Austria), Ella Fern (USA) and Dhara Lad (Canada) which divides the ‘True Tales of American Life’ into two different types of stories – ones that are uplifting and those that are darker in tone. They construct a division – a physical cut in the publication, as well as conceptual one – between tales of the above and the below, where visual elements cross the divide, appearing whole in one spread and being cut in subsequent pages, forming new combinations reassembled through the act of reading.
